Ukraine

9 February 2022

Senator David Van will be speaking to the Senate today between 12:15 and 1:30 pm on the current geopolitical situation in Ukraine and what Australia’s, and the world’s, response should be to the rising threat of Russia in the region.

“Australian commentary in recent weeks about the increased risk of war between Russia and Ukraine misses the simple fact that the two countries are already at war,” said Senator Van.

“Russia must immediately de-escalate, however should Putin prove unwilling to do so, the EU and UN’s support for Ukraine’s territorial and sovereign integrity must be unwavering.”

The situation between Ukraine and Russia should be a key issue for Australia, especially as the world’s response will signal to China that the West is willing to appease large powers who threaten smaller democracies, opening up Taiwan to Chinese ambition.
