Remembering Ukraine's Resilience on the Second Anniversary of War

‘If Russia stops fighting there will be no war if Ukraine stops fighting there will be no Ukraine’

Today marks the sombre occasion of the 2nd Anniversary of Ukraine's invasion, compelling us to confront the harsh reality that has unfolded over the past 730 days. In the quiet moments between headlines, amidst the discord of global affairs, we pause to remember the unrelenting suffering endured by Ukraine. February 24th stands as a stark reminder of their ongoing struggle against aggression and injustice.

For 730 days, innocent Ukrainians have lived in perpetual fear, uncertain if each day would be their last. Running to air raid shelters, enduring blackouts in the bitter cold of winter, dodging missiles, bombs and bullets; this has become their daily reality. The simple act of waking up has become a gamble with life itself.

Australia has played a pivotal role in providing consistent support to Ukraine, although not to the extent that many, including myself, have called for. The recent announcement of $50 million from the Government is a welcomed contribution from my corner, but there is more to be done. Our support for Ukraine is not just about assisting a nation in need; it's about upholding the international rules-based order and defending democratic principles. It's imperative that, alongside our international partners, we sustain our support to prevent the erosion of these fundamental global principles.

Two years ago, Putin's arrogance led him to believe that he could swiftly dismantle Ukraine and sow discord throughout Europe. Russia's relentless onslaught spares no one, not even innocent children who find themselves in the crossroads of this invasion. The humanitarian situation remains dire, with millions of civilians in urgent need of food, shelter and medical care. As of January 10, 2024, the UN reported 10,242 civilians had died and 19,337 more bore the scars of injury. Yet these figures were only likely to scratch the surface.

Today and every other day that this conflict continues, Ukraine supporters send a resounding message to dictators and despots everywhere: we will not tolerate aggression or the undermining of the rules-based global order. Together, we stand against tyranny, united in our commitment to defend the principles of freedom and democracy.

As we commemorate this solemn anniversary and honour the bravery of the Ukrainian people, let us not only remember their plight but also reaffirm our commitment, for their struggle is our struggle and their resilience is our inspiration.
